Incursions is socially-engaged walking project facilitated by Kitty McKay, Archie Smith and various other collaborators in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Once a weekly ‘walking forum’, now an intermittent art and research project, Incursions combines walking, talking, mapping, archiving, filmmaking, writing and collective research to reflect on collective experiences of space and place.

Incursions has been running in different forms since 2019 with the aim to work with groups to shift dominant neoliberal narratives of space and place, co-authoring ‘counter-narratives’ for how our public spaces and build active solidarities within them. Incursions often designs walking routes and art works that draw on social histories, pop cultures and personal experiences of the built environment. These routes and works are usually participatory, with an open invitation for anyone to join and contribute.

Incursions has programmed activity and produced art works for various institutions across the UK, including BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Farrell Centre, South London Gallery, The National Trust, The NewBridge Project, Firstsite Gallery, ICA London, Newcastle University, Goldsmiths University of London and Northumbria University, amongst many others.
