In The Real was a group show curated by Penelope Payne for the North East Open Call at Middlesbrough Art Week, 2025.

“Philosopher David Lewis’s theory of modal realism proposes just that: that all possible worlds are not mere imaginings, but fully real. Within this framework, parallel narratives don’t simply ask “what if?”- they assert “what is.”

I think the five artists presented here move within this multiplicity. Their works don’t simply observe the world they inhabit, they reconstruct it, each guided by their own emotional topology, their own spatial understanding, their own universe. Through painting, sculpture and lens-based media, they challenge the coherence of linear time and singular identity. They show us what is, and what is elsewhere.

They present ways to make the impossible possible, each guided by their own emotional topology, their own spatial understanding, their own reality.

Their works act as lenses, focusing our attention on the fractures, and layered possibilities embedded in everyday experience. Positioned between the hyper-focused and the more abstract, they reveal worlds running parallel to our own.” - Penelope Payne
